2013.02.16 | Featured Fests | Wakarusa

Though we are still working on the festival guide for the 2013 festival season, we're putting up some highlights of the coming summer. This weeks feature is Wakarusa.

2013 Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival

Nestled in the beautiful Arkansas Ozarks, the 2013 Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival is going all out. Everything from rowdy bluegrass to indie rock to electronic and dubstep is incorporated into four days of music spread over six stages. Along with the music comes hiking through the scenic mountains, floating/kayaking in the Mulberry River, as well as on site activities such as shopping, the ferris wheel, or the water slide. Wakarusa tickets are only around $180 with fees, much cheaper than other festivals such as Bonnaroo without sacrificing the true festy experience ($350+).

Lineup: Widespread Panic, Dispatch, STS9, The Black Crowes, Umphrey's McGee, Amon Tobin, Snoop Lion, Yonder Mountain String Band, Gogol Bordello, Zeds Dead, Of Monsters and Men, Rebelution, SOJA, Grouplove, Galactic, Sphongle, Son Volt, Calexico, Ozomatli, Emancipator, EOTO, RJD2, The Motet, New Monsoon, and hundreds more.

2013.01.30 | Featured Artist | Elephant Revival

Serene moonlight cascades through the trees. I lean back in my chair and enjoy the elegance of the night. The crickets are bringing the song of spring to my moonlit porch. The clairvoyant serenades of Elephant Revival bring clarity and calm to my mind. Relax. Enjoy. Repeat.

Elephant Revival formed in 2006 after crossing paths in the picturesque Colorado mountain town of Nederland. Sometimes called "transcendental folk", Elephant Revival is not afraid to push the boundaries of traditional folk music. Their first album, the self-titled Elephant Revial, as well as consitent performances in the Front Range music scene quickly brought them national attention. Since releasing their second and latest album, Break in the Cloud, Elephant Revival has consistently toured the country, playing with artists such as Bela Fleck, the String Cheese Incident, Yonder Mountain String Band, Dispatch and even Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones. Their latest EP, It's Alive, was recently released on November 20th of 2012.

2013.01.29 | Emancipator Releases New Album, Dusk to Dawn

Emancipator wants to set you free. With a distinct and enthralling hybrid between electronic and traditional instrumentation, Emancipator's wunderkind Doug Appling is ostensibly waging a kind of war on the expectations we hold for music. Dusk to Dawn, the third album released by Emancipator and the first released by Appling's newly-founded Loci Records, drops today January 29th amid an extensive US tour. Dusk to Dawn is the first release from Emancipator in three years. The first single, "Minor Cause", has been added to the station as well as "The Way" which features Dominic Lalli, from Big Gigantic, on saxophone.

2013.01.28 | New music videos from Tame Impala and Grizzly Bear

Released today through the magic and majesty of the interwebs are two interesting videos from two very interesting bands. Tame Imapala's Mind Mischief from the album Lonerism follows a brief and illicit relationship between student and teacher. The climactic scenes evolve into some trippy animation that does get a bit NSFW. Also out today is Grizzly Bear's new video for the song Gun-Shy off the album Shields. The video studies some aspects of the physical bodies of Grizzly Bear's members and explores some digital and telescopic modifications of the images captured. Make sure to check out both Lonerism and Shields, in stores and online now.

2012.01.28 | Jim James Announces Tour

My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James will release his debut solo album, on February 5th. The release will be followed by a few northeastern US tour dates in late February and James will tour a bit more extensively in April and May. James will also appear on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon performing alongside Fallon's house band, The Roots, on February 4th and 5th promoting the album. You can stream and hear Regions of Light and Sound of God at NPR.

2013.01.27 | The Mars Volta Disband

Experimental-latin-noise-rockers The Mars Volta have broken up as reported by singer Cedric Bixler Zavala via his twitter.

The Mars Volta formed in 2001 after the disbanding of their previous project At the Drive-In who it is worth mentioning reunited at last year's Coachella and Lollapallooza festivals. The Mars Volta released 6 albums beginning with 2003's groundbreaking De-loused in the Comatorium and apparently ending with 2012's Noctourniquet. The new project of Volta guitarist Omar Rodriguez Lopez and drummer Deantoni Parks, Bosnian Rainbows, are set to release their first album, Torn Maps, in the summer of 2013.

2013.01.27 | The Flaming Lips' The Terror Drops April 2nd

In their three decade history, the Flaming Lips have played almost every role imaginable in the rock scene, from local heroes to rock and roll underdogs, to elaborate and grandiose live-show pioneers, to grammy winning darlings, to top 40 radio regulars, to total psychedelic wildcards. Now, after 14 albums which showcase talents in styles from punk to pop to hypothetic and futuristic rock, and a 3 year break from recording and releasing a traditional studio album, the Lips are set to release The Terror on April 1st of 2013. The nine track album will be available for digital pre-order on January 29th. A non-album track, "Sun Blows Up Today" will be available with pre-order of the album (also available below), and that track will also be heard in an advertisement premiering during the Superbowl on February 3rd starring the Lips.

2013.01.27 | Featured Artists | Father John Misty

Josh Tillman has spent years earning his current position in the indie-pop spotlight. After a near three year stint of recording and touring with Seattle's Fleet Foxes, which itself came after an even longer stint of solo records and shows, Tillman decided to move himself to L. A., don the moniker Father John Misty, and release an album.

Fear Fun is a collection of songs obviously informed intimately by past experience yet it signifies a new commitment to a frank and creative sincerity- a sincerity that never necessarily excludes an often dark and always witty sense of humor- that Tillman never seemed fully comfortable incorporating in past endeavors.

Father John Misty is scheduled to perform both weekends of Coachella in April.

2013.01.27 | Updates to RadioCallisto.com

I am still working on the website. We will have some new content, such as live show and album reviews, up on the site quite soon. I am also working on an Android app that will be available on the Google Play Store in February. You can download it on the site right now by clicking the link in the menu bar. Album artwork for recent tracks and the flash player is our current project. We have close to a thousand songs on the station and we will be increasing the number well past that mark soon.
